This screen print of guitar-burning Jimi Hendrix was part of ‘You Say You Want a Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966-1970’ at the V&A from 10 September 2016 to 26 February 2017, and is part of the museum’s permanent collection.

Victoria Broackes a Director of the V&A Museum says: “Larry Smart’s poster designs of musicians are amongst the most iconic of the period. His ‘Fire’ poster of Hendrix came about following a commission from Michael Phillips, of the company ForPosters, who had seen a painting Smart had done of Hendrix. The artist admired Hendrix as a musician and by framing Hendrix with flames he references his track 'Fire' (1967), his stage performance of setting his guitar on fire, as well as the way his luminous but all too short career set the world alight. This striking image of Hendrix was one of a series of large posters made by this artist: the others include Frank Zappa, Mick Jagger and John Lennon. We were thrilled to show the Hendrix work in our 1960s You Say You Want a Revolution? exhibition at the V&A, as well as Smart’s image of John Lennon which adorned the book that accompanied the show.”A version of the Hendrix print will be available for viewing at The Muse Gallery, 269 Portobello Road, London W11 1LR from 21 June to 2 July. Larry Smart RETRO-spective is the first ever solo exhibition by iconic 60s pop artist Larry Smart. Other works on display present an overview of the artist's work and include Lennon and Dylan silkscreen prints; Sixties mandala paintings with associated light show; Marrakech landscapes and townscapes; English landscapes; Whole Earth Foods packaging art; Hokusai 'wave' topiary.
